Daniel Abshere
What do you do at the Mission?
I am the men’s house manager, teacher, IT Administrator, and I run the computer/electronics department.
Tell us about yourself
I used to build lasers and data acquisition systems. I moved from San Francisco to Reno in January 2000. I continued to build lasers but became restless with it, so in 2003, I started training in the IT field. Best move I ever made. This field keeps me on my toes; like my relationship with God.
What’s one thing about you that surprises people?
That I actually talk to my family and the people around me. For over 20 years, I worked in laboratories by myself, just doing my thing. I was a misanthropic non-Christian.
What’s the most influential book you’ve read besides the Bible?
The Complete Angler by Izaak Walton.
Favorite TV show or movie?
The Outlaw Josey Whales
How did you end up at the Mission?
In 2006, my drinking became so bad that I almost died. I was alone, without God and finally became aware that I desperately needed to change my life. I had tried a 28-day program and I failed. I found RSGM and entered the program in April 2006.
What’s the best criticism you ever received?
That I needed to stop being a lone wolf and start fellowshipping with good people.
How did you come to know Christ?
When I was in the program, the director pulled me aside and told me that it takes a real man to surrender to Jesus. He also told me that I needed to humble myself before God. After praying about this I went down to the river by myself and was still for some time. Right at sunset I gave myself to God. My life changed forever.
What hobbies do you have?
Fly Fishing.
Biggest fear?
Spiders
What do you like most about being part of the Mission team?
The love and companionship.
What food never touches your lips?
Filter feeders and liver.
Favorite memory at the Mission?
After I graduated, my boss asked me to be the Victory Center men’s house manager. I remember going home that night elated. Rick gave me the chance to give back by helping the new brothers come to Jesus.
Morning or evening person?
Morning.
Why the Gospel Mission?
The Mission is the most incredible place to work. Helping others come to Jesus makes me very happy. I never used to help anyone but myself. Every time I get other offers I pray about it and the answer is, “God is not done with me being here.” I hope He is never done with me being here. I love everyone here. I have never before been at peace when I wake up in the morning. It’s a good feeling.
