Vanessa Hernandez
What do you do at the Mission?
I am the clothing services manager and I help oversee the women’s program.
Tell us about yourself
I am 22 years old and have a beautiful family and a strong relationship with the Lord.
What’s one thing about you that surprises people?
I’m a lot deeper than people take me for.
What’s the most influential book you’ve read besides the Bible?
Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.
Favorite TV show or movie?
The Notebook.
How did you end up at the Mission?
I ended up at the Mission after turning myself into drug court. I thought I was headed to prison but they gave me a choice, and I chose to give the Mission a shot. That choice has changed my life for the better.
What’s the best criticism you ever received?
Check your motives.
How did you come to know Christ?
I grew up knowing God was real but the Mission showed me that God loves me personally – no matter what – and that the Bible wasn’t just a book that was used a million years ago. It is relevant and meaningful for today.
What hobbies do you have?
Some of my favorite things to do are shopping, playing pool, and just spending time with my friends and family.
Biggest fear?
Making God seem unappealing to others.
What do you like most about being part of the Mission team?
The thing I love about being part of the Mission team is being able to work as a family. Doing God’s will is spreading His good news.
What food never touches your lips?
Squid. It just seems like it would be gross.
Favorite memory at the Mission?
On Dec. 17, 2008, I graduated the Mission’s CARE Program. That was the very first goal I accomplished whole-heartedly. God showed me then that in serving Him anything is possible.
Morning or evening person?
It depends.
Why the Gospel Mission?
Because God’s presence fills this place. Hope for a chance at a new life is obtained here. And love for yourself as well as others is found here. Why wouldn’t I want to be a part of that?
