Addictions
For those suffering from addictions, the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission offers hope through its free yearlong residential recovery program, Christian Addiction Recovery and Education, or C.A.R.E. for short.
The four-phase C.A.R.E. program is a 12-month commitment to change. It is designed to bring men and women to Christ, provide a safe environment for sobriety and to change faulty thinking patterns and poor decision-making. Clients receive the training they need to handle life’s problems without turning to alcohol, drugs or gambling.
Men and women in the program receive free housing, meals, clothing and personal hygiene products.
In return, they attend educational classes designed to strengthen their commitment to God while working on specific areas of concern, such as addictions, money management, relationships and anger. The Mission also offers a basic computer skills course for those who want to learn office skills.
The first half of the program focuses on building a solid biblical foundation and addressing their immediate needs and addiction. The second half prepares them for a mature Christian life and for return to society as productive, responsible tax-paying citizens.
Program clients attend daily chapel services, weekly prayer meetings and Bible studies.
One of the main thrusts of the program is its work therapy component. Clients are assigned to various work areas such as the warehouse, maintenance crew, appliances or thrift stores. They utilize their existing skills or are trained in retail, how to repair large and small appliances and electronics, furniture repair, maintenance, and how to operate forklifts and other heavy machinery.
For clients interested in specific skills, we try to place them alongside a trained staff member so they can learn a trade such as appliance repair or woodworking.
Each assignment stresses self-discipline, responsibility and strong work ethics.
Our goal is to bring needed change in many areas of their lives by giving them ample opportunities for a personal encounter with Jesus Christ, the Creator of new lives.
In fact, 8 out of 10 men and women who complete our program DO NOT return to their previous lifestyles.
